Recently, we saw two presentations that focused on communication in groups and the role of leadership in problem solving. Both presentations were very related and explained how important teamwork and communication are in everyday life, especially in school, work, and relationships with other people. I enjoyed both of them because they were informative and easy to relate to.
The first group talked about communication in different kinds of groups. One thing that stood out to me was how communication can affect both the success or failure of a team. I learned that when people communicate clearly and respectfully, the group works better together and avoids misunderstandings. One concept from the presentation that I found very relevant was mediated communication in virtual groups. This type of communication happens when people interact through technology instead of face-to-face conversations. Examples include Zoom meetings, group chats, emails, social media, and online classes. I think this topic is especially important today because many schools and workplaces rely heavily on virtual communication. The presentation explained that mediated communication can make teamwork easier because people can collaborate from different places and schedules. However, it can also create challenges such as misunderstandings, distractions, technical problems, or lack of personal connection. I personally relate to this because virtual communication became very common after the pandemic, and sometimes it is harder to understand emotions or intentions through a screen compared to in-person interactions. Even so, virtual groups can still be successful when members communicate clearly, respond respectfully, and stay organized.
Another topic that I found interesting was the characteristics of healthy groups in communication. The presentation explained that healthy groups are built on trust, respect, cooperation, and open communication. In a healthy group, every member feels comfortable sharing ideas and opinions without fear of being judged. I think this is very important because when people feel respected, they participate more and contribute better ideas to the group. The presenters also mentioned that healthy groups have clear goals, good listening skills, and equal participation among members. Conflicts can still happen, but healthy groups solve problems calmly and respectfully instead of arguing or blaming each other. I personally believe that positive communication creates a stronger connection between group members and helps the team become more successful overall. The second presentation focused on leadership in groups, and I really enjoyed this topic because leadership is something that can influence the success of an entire team. The presenters explained that a good leader is not simply someone who gives instructions, but someone who motivates, guides, and supports the group. Effective leaders help keep everyone organized, encourage participation, and make sure that every member feels included. I learned that leadership also requires responsibility, patience, and good communication skills.
One thing that stood out to me was the idea that leaders should remain calm during difficult situations. In group settings, disagreements and challenges are normal, but strong leaders help the group stay focused on solving problems instead of creating more conflict. The presentation also explained that good leaders listen to other people’s opinions and are open to different ideas instead of trying to control everything themselves. I think this is important because teamwork becomes stronger when everyone feels valued and respected.
I personally related to this topic because leadership can be seen in everyday life, especially at work and in school projects. Even people who are not officially “leaders” can still show leadership qualities by helping others, staying positive, and taking initiative when necessary. Overall, this presentation helped me understand that leadership is more about communication, teamwork, and support than simply being in charge.
Another important topic from the presentation was systematic problem solving. I found this concept very useful because it showed how groups can solve problems in an organized and effective way instead of making rushed decisions. The presenters explained that systematic problem solving involves identifying the problem, analyzing the situation, thinking about possible solutions, choosing the best option, and finally evaluating the results. I liked this idea because it helps groups stay focused and avoid confusion when facing challenges.
The presentation also explained that communication plays a major role during the problem-solving process. Group members need to share ideas openly, listen to each other, and work together respectfully in order to find the best solution. I learned that different perspectives can actually improve problem solving because every person may notice something different about the situation. Even though disagreements can happen, they can lead to better solutions when handled calmly and professionally.
I personally think systematic problem solving is an important skill in both school and work environments. At work, problems can happen unexpectedly, and staying organized helps reduce stress and mistakes. Overall, this presentation helped me understand that solving problems step by step allows groups to work more efficiently and make better decisions together.
